Responsibilities

The Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Unit coordinates enterprise-wide health and safety initiatives designed to ensure a safe and healthful environment for donors, patients, personnel, and visitors while assuring compliance to federal, state, and local regulatory requirements. Additionally, the EH&S Unit evaluates and recommends measures to control workplace hazards, particularly laboratory-settings through field inspections, hazard analysis, training, and program development. As a member of the EH&S Unit, the Safety Manager will work in conjunction with the Executive Director of EH&S towards continuous safety improvements and support of the NYBCe’s EH&S Policy through the implementation of laboratory safety procedures consistent with the company's requirements and applicable EH&S regulations, codes, and standards. 

 

  • Laboratory Safety: Lead the Laboratory Safety Program to strengthen laboratory safety culture and operational standards within the research and clinical testing community. Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) on lab safety.
  • Serve as the Chemical Hygiene Officer, overseeing and ensuring the implementation of comprehensive laboratory safety and chemical hygiene plans, policies, and procedures.
  • Conduct comprehensive hazard assessments in laboratory settings to identify potential risks.
  • Develop and conduct training relevant to laboratory/research safety, biosafety, personal protective equipment, hazard communication, and other laboratory safety related topics.
  • Work with organizational divisions and laboratories to implement consistent safety practices and procedures.
  • Develop and maintain policies, procedures, checklists, web references, and materials that support the survey program as needed.
  • Continuously improve the EH&S on-boarding process across NYBCe, in collaboration with the Divisions to provide critical risk and EH&S culture awareness among new employees.
  • Support NYBC activities associated with accidents and workers’ compensation claims.
  • Manage the laboratory safety inspection program: evaluate laboratory research hazards; ensure lab inspections are conducted regulatory requirements; manage and maintain inspection database; develop and monitor metrics for safety and program performance.
  • Conduct routine safety site audits and reviews to identify systemic EH&S management gaps, develop corrective measures and implement solutions to sustain compliance with regulatory and NYBCe requirements. Ensure the timely correction of findings.
  • Participate in the development and dissemination of policies and plans for health and environmental monitoring, waste management, contamination risk assessment, biosafety, biosecurity, and other issues pertaining to animal health.
  • Assist the Executive Director of EH&S to update the fire and life safety protection program, including the coordination of building evacuation drills, shelter in-place and table-top exercises for local Divisions.
  • Participate in the development and delivery of an effective and compliant EH&S training program.
  • Respond to site EH&S related emergency situations, including fires, explosions, chemical release, medical.
  • Provides leadership and oversight for all chemical and waste management functions and activities.
  • Assist in the management of the radiation safety program.

 

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university in Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, Industrial Safety, or related field of study. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree in biology or chemistry with appropriate relevant experience will be considered.

Related Experience:

  • Minimum of five to seven (7) years environmental health and safety experience, particularly in a laboratory environment
  • Facilities EH&S program development, implementation and management experience required.

Required Licenses / Certification:

  • Associated Safety Professional (ASP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) strongly preferred.
  • OSHA Authorized Trainer in General Industry preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

For applicants who will perform this position in New York City or Westchester County, the proposed annual salary is $120,000.00 p/yr to $130,000.00 p/yr. For applicants who will perform this position outside of New York City or Westchester County, salary will reflect local market rates and be commensurate with the applicant’s skills, job-related knowledge, and experience.
