Responsibilities

This position is part of the enterprise-wide Medical Office and is based at the NYBC (primary) and RIBC and BBD (secondary) divisions. This role is responsible for providing medical directorship for the technical and clinical operations of the blood center laboratories at NYBC, RIBC and BBD, as well as providing support and guidance to collections staff, other internal stakeholders, and customer hospitals. The position is expected to actively participate in teaching, research, quality improvement and continuous learning. Finally, the position supports management in making informed medical decision and develops and reviews medical oversight and responsibility for technical and medical policies.

 

While the position will primarily be based in Rye, physical location position may be at multiple locations in multiple states, depending on assignment and the needs of the organization. This position will be onsite on average 4 to 5 days a week.

  • Provide daily coverage on all donor criteria questions and support on-call fellow as backup, makes decisions per medical criteria and replies to donor and hospital questions.
  • Contributes to development of procedures, job aids, work instructions and medical criteria for use by front line staff.
  • Participate in transfusion medicine fellow and other postgraduate teaching activities, including presenting on NYBCe webinar series, including Essentials of Transfusion Medicine, Lab Week, and Beyond Essentials.
  • Develop close relationships with clinical staff and front-line staff and provide expert consultation internally within NYBCe and externally to hospitals.
  • Assure participation in quality assurance activities and high performance of assigned program and services.
  • Participate in regional, national and international societies dedicated to transfusion medicine, apheresis medicine and/or cellular therapies.
  • Publish articles, chapters, books, and lectures and gives presentations on a local, national and international level.

Qualifications

Education:

  • M.D. or D.O. 

Experience

  • At least 1 year experience in clinical/laboratory aspects of transfusion and apheresis medicine beyond transfusion medicine fellowship training medicine. Such experience should include medical supervision of transfusion services or blood donor activities.

Licenses:

  • Currently have, or ability to obtain with 6 months of employment (1) a full license to practice medicine in the following states: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maryland; (2) NYS Certificate of Qualification (COQ) in Blood Collection – Comprehensive; (3) NYS Certificate of Qualification Transfusion Services. www.wadsworth.org/regulatory/clep/certificate-requirements
  • Must have the ability to cover up to 5 CLIA-licensed laboratories associated with NYBCe.

Certifications: Board certification in Clinical Pathology, Hematology, or Pediatric Hematology plus Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine ( required)

 

Knowledge:

  • Expert knowledge of state and federal regulations.

  • Ability to travel up to 25%.
  • Ability to provide medical directorship face-to-face, via phone/web-meeting or on-call to various groups.
  • Ability to lead, direct and mentor staff.

For applicants who will perform this position in New York City or Westchester County, the proposed annual salary is $300,000 p/yr. to $335,000 p/yr. For applicants who will perform this position outside of New York City or Westchester County, salary will reflect local market rates and be commensurate with the applicant’s skills, job-related knowledge, and experience.
