Responsibilities

This position is responsible for assisting in the supervision of and overseeing the day-to-day shift activities and workflow in the laboratory.

  • Leads and provides feedback to assigned staff.
  • Ensures laboratory SOPs, practices, policies, procedures, guidelines and regulations are followed and where appropriate under cGMP condition.
  • Triages and performs patient testing.
  • Assures optimal product inventory and is able to place product orders for internal and external requests during shifts.
  • Performs platelet antibody screen and crossmatching.
  • Performs or delegates quality control on automated hematology analyzer, currently Sysmex XE-2100D.
  • Assigns work based on priority and shift conditions and reviews logs and recap reports on a daily basis.
  • Ensures smooth transition from shift to shift.
  • Makes recommendations to improve business unit operations.
  • Works on-call as necessary.
  • Works OT to cover shifts and holidays.
  • Any related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in clinical laboratory technology, or
  • Bachelor's or higher degree from a program with a major in biology, chemistry, or the physical sciences, and an advanced certificate in clinical laboratory technology, or
  • Education and training sufficient to qualify for licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist prior to 2009 as specified in NYS-ED Regulation 79-13.4.

Experience:

  • If bachelor’s degree with at least four years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience subsequent to qualifying of which at least two years have been spent working in a clinical laboratory having a director at the doctoral level.
  • If master’s degree with at least two years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience subsequent to qualifying of which at least two years have been spent working in a clinical laboratory having a director at the doctoral level.

Pursuant to New York Codes, Rules and Regulations, Title 10 Section 58-1.4 Qualifications of Laboratory Supervisor (c), there is no substitute for the experience criteria.

 

Licenses / Certifications:

  • NY State Clinical Laboratory Technologist License

 

Knowledge:

  • Expert knowledge in NYS Department of Health regulations.
  • Knowledge of cGMP and GLP.
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of computerized systems.
  • Basic understanding of quality control procedures.
  • Knowledge of a variety of software applications (Microsoft Office Suite).

Skills & Abilities:

  • Skill in pipetting.
  • Attention to detail in all work processes.
  • High level of interpersonal skills to handle a variety of moderate issues and situations.  Position requires demonstrated poise, tact and diplomacy in dealing with a variety of staff up to and including executive leadership.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and with authority, both in writing and verbally, to others in one-on-one or small group settings.
  • Ability to interact with individuals at all levels of the organization and customers in a helpful, courteous and friendly manner while demonstrating sensitivity to and respect for diverse populations.
  • Ability to plan and organize job tasks or resources in an efficient manner.
  • Ability to be responsive and available to management in order to address issues and concerns as they arise.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify and analyze the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems within established policies and procedures.
  • Ability to identify moderate problems in a timely manner, decipher information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.

 

For applicants who will perform this position in New York City or Westchester County, the proposed hiring rate is $61.03p/hr. to $64.10p/hr. For applicants who will perform this position outside of New York City or Westchester County, salary will reflect local market rates and be commensurate with the applicant’s skills, job-related knowledge, and experience
